The Church Society was founded in 1950 by merger of the Church Association (founded 1865) and the National Church League (founded 1906). The latter body was an amalgamation of the National Protestant Church Union (founded 1893) and the Church of England League (founded 1904; formerly the Ladies' league, 1899).
